Why Your Candid Profile Deserves a Second Look

As grant competition grows and more of the review process moves online, funders and donors have more ways than ever to learn about an organization before they read a single word of an application. At Momentum, we always recommend strengthening relationships and building visibility as the foundation for generating support from funders and DAF donors alike, but that foundation is worth pairing with simple, tactical steps too. One of the most overlooked is an organization's Candid profile, which can build credibility and trust well before a funder ever opens a proposal.
Candid, the organization behind GuideStar and Foundation Center, maintains public profiles for millions of nonprofits, including basic information like mission, programs, financials, and service areas. Organizations can also earn a Seal of Transparency (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum) by voluntarily sharing more detailed information about their leadership, impact, and outcomes. The more complete and current the profile, the higher the Seal an organization can reach.
This information is showing up earlier and more often in the grant process than many organizations realize. Program officers reviewing applications frequently pull up an organization's Candid profile as a first step, before they ever open the proposal itself. A growing number of grant portals now integrate directly with Candid, letting applicants auto-populate organizational information rather than retyping it into every application. That same integration gives reviewers one click of access to an organization's full Candid profile right alongside the application, so whatever is on that profile is effectively part of what gets reviewed. A profile that is outdated, thin, or hard to understand can create doubt before a funder has read a single word of the actual proposal. A profile that clearly explains the mission, who is served, and what results look like builds credibility right out of the gate.
Candid data is also increasingly built into the tools donor advised fund sponsors use to recommend grants. Platforms like Fidelity Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, and community foundations pull Candid profiles directly into their giving portals, so a DAF donor searching for a cause area often sees an organization's Candid information before ever visiting its website. Recent data shared by Vanguard Charitable makes the stakes clear: organizations with a Platinum Seal of Transparency receive more than twice the grant dollars of organizations without a Seal.
A few practical ways to strengthen a Candid profile:
Make sure every section is filled in completely. Someone unfamiliar with the organization should be able to read the profile and understand what it does, who it serves, and what impact looks like, without needing outside context.
Keep information current. Outdated addresses, old financials, or a stale mission statement all signal to a funder that the organization may not be as buttoned up as it could be.
Work toward a higher Seal level over time. Even moving from Bronze to Silver, or Silver to Gold, adds credibility, and Platinum status carries a real, measurable advantage in grant dollars received.
Strong relationships and a strong Candid profile work together. Relationships build trust directly, and a strong Candid profile makes sure that trust holds up wherever a funder or donor looks next.
